Susan Croce Kelly will join us in person to discuss the achievements and adventures of Lucile Morris Upton, captured in Kelly's new book from the University of Arkansas Press - Newspaperwoman of the Ozarks: The Life and Times of Lucile Morris Upton.
Upton landed her first newspaper job out West in the early 1920s, then returned home to spend half a century reporting on the Ozarks world she knew best. Coming of age just as women gained the right to vote, she rubbed shoulders with presidents, flew with aviation pioneer Wiley Post, covered the worst single killing of U.S. police officers in the twentieth century, wrote an acclaimed book on the vigilante group the Bald Knobbers, charted the growth of tourism in the Ozarks, and spearheaded a movement to preserve iconic sites of regional history. Upton may have been best known as half of the Lucile Morris Upton–Betty Love reporter-photographer duo sent by the Springfield News & Leader to cover everything from murders and bank robberies to centennial celebrations and Ozarks folkways, often making the news as much as reporting on it.
Susan Croce Kelly is a former newspaper reporter and the author of two award-winning books on the history of old US 66: Route 66: The Highway and Its People (University of Oklahoma Press) and Father of Route 66: The Story of Cy Avery. Holding a master’s in history from Saint Louis University, she is managing editor of OzarksWatch Magazine for Missouri State University’s Ozarks Studies Institute.
