Join clergy from Christ Episcopal Church (Little Rock) and Second Presbyterian Church (Little Rock) to explore Elizabeth Oldfield's FULLY ALIVE: TENDING TO THE SOUL IN TURBULENT TIMES during this Lenten Book Study.

How can we become the kinds of people the world needs now? In a book hailed by Krista Tippet as "A great gift to all in search of a deeper life," Elizabeth Oldfield draws on her Christian tradition to explore the Seven Deadly Sins as a source for liberation. Acknowledging wrath can help us move from polarization to peacemaking; dealing with gluttony can help us escape numbing and find ecstasy. Sin by sin, Oldfield invites all of us, religious or not, to tend our souls so that we can live more open, generous, and resilient lives.

“Oldfield has a gift for writing about the things that matter most in a way that’s honest, warmhearted, and down-to-earth.”

—Oliver Burkeman, author of Four Thousand Weeks

“This is a rare thing—an open, human, vulnerable profession of faith. I learned a lot.”

—Katherine May, author of Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times

The Lenten Book Study will be led by The Rev. Ragan Sutterfield, Associate Rector, Christ Episcopal Church; The Rev. Hannah Hooker, Associate Rector, Christ Episcopal Church; Rev. Dr. Benjamin E. E. Kane, Pastor/Head of Staff, Second Presbyterian Church; and Lindy Vogado, Associate Pastor for Belonging & Outreach, Second Presbyterian Church.

The Lenten Book Study featuring Fully Alive: Tending to the Soul in Turbulent Times by Elizabeth Oldfield will take place weekly on Tuesdays from March 11, 2025 to April 15, 2025 from Noon to 1pm. A light lunch will be served each week starting at 11:45a. All sessions will be held at the CALS Children's Library Activity Room (4800 W. 10th Street, Little Rock) EXCEPT Tuesday, March 25 which will be held at CALS Fletcher Library Program Room (823 North Buchanan Street, Little Rock).

About the branch

The Hillary Rodham Clinton Children’s Library & Learning Center includes a computer lab with fourteen computers, teaching kitchen, large activity area, individual and group study rooms, theater, and community room in addition to a collection of more than 21,000 books, DVDs, and CDs.

In the 165-seat theater, children can experience all aspects of theater, including designing and building sets, writing plays, acting, and costume design. The state-of-the-art sound system, lighting, and projection screens is also be used for movies, concerts, and lectures.

The Children’s Library’s grounds are integral to the entire facility’s program. A greenhouse and teaching garden helps children learn about growing healthy foods as well as provide produce that are used in the teaching kitchen programs. The grounds reflect the topography of Arkansas’s ecosystems, from the native hardwood trees in the highlands to vegetation of the wetland areas, which are both planted and original to the site. Walking paths offer families an attractive place for exercise while learning the names of the trees and plants, and an amphitheater has seating for outdoor programs or nature watching.
