The (R)evolution of Indigenous Foodways.

A member of the Oglala Lakota tribe, Chef Sean Sherman was born and raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. His work focuses on the revitalization and evolution of Indigenous food systems across North America, reclaiming and celebrating the rich culinary heritage of Indigenous communities worldwide. Through his nonprofit, North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems, and its Indigenous Food Lab, Sherman is making Indigenous foods more accessible while addressing economic and health disparities in Native communities. NATIFS envisions a new North American food system that generates wealth and improves health in Native communities through food-related enterprises.

Sherman is also an award-winning author. His book, “The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen,” co-written with Beth Dooley, received the James Beard Award for Best American Cookbook in 2018. He later opened Owamni by The Sioux Chef, Minnesota’s first full-service Indigenous restaurant, which earned the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in America in 2022. Sherman has been widely recognized for his leadership and innovation, including the James Beard Foundation Leadership Award (2019), TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People (2023), and the Julia Child Award (2023).

A Q&A will be led by Erin Fehr, Sequoyah National Research Center.
