Programming Room

This hands-on class introduces free and open-source operating systems like Linux—and explores alternatives such as FreeBSD—to show how anyone can use powerful, community-driven software without licensing costs.

We’ll cover what open-source really means, how these systems differ from Windows and macOS, and how they can extend the life of older computers while giving users more control, privacy, and stability.

What you’ll learn:

  • What “free and open source” actually means (and why it matters)
  • A beginner-friendly look at Linux distributions and other OS options
  • Real-world uses: everyday computing, creativity, repair, and reuse
  • How open-source software supports sustainability and digital independence

No prior Linux experience required—curiosity encouraged. The goal is empowerment, not intimidation.
